So, lets get started with the name Linux itself.    Linux is an opensource operating system  whose heart the Linux kernel  was written by computer programmer named Linus Torvalds  in C programming language.       Unlike Microsoft Windows  and MacOS  operating systems which are closed source  and not free to use, you can use Linux as you want and you are also completely  free to modify  and distribute it just by following the GNU General Public License  or GPL which in simple words states that you cannot sell and charge  anybody for the Linux distribution you have modified making it free for everybody to use.       There are hundreds of distribution for Linux, one for everybody but from these only a few are much popular than others and are mostly used and have Long Term Support [LTS].
