Linux is an opensource operating system whose heart the Linux kernel was written by computer programmer named Linus Torvalds in C programming language.
Unlike Microsoft Windows and MacOS operating systems which are closed source and not free to use, you can use Linux as you want and you are also completely free to modify and distribute it just by following the GNU General Public License or GPL which in simple words states that you cannot sell and charge anybody for the Linux distribution you have modified making it free for everybody to use.
There are hundreds of distribution for Linux, one for everybody but from these only a few are much popular than others and are mostly used and have Long Term Support [LTS].
